Most incandescent bulbs burn out in less than a year, while most LED lights last up to 50,000 hours. Colour matching across a group of lighting fixtures reduces eye strain, and slower burnout rates means fixtures will retain color consistency for a longer period of time.

Flicker

LED lights display a very small amount of flicker to no flickering at all because they are typically powered by constant DC voltage. In contrast, lighting fixtures that run on alternating current systems display flickering at 120 Hz cycles per second, or double the typical US power line frequency of 60 Hz cycles per second. Fluorescent and incandescent lights both display such flickering, which is difficult for the human eye to perceive, but causes problems nonetheless. Common ailments associated with flickering, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, include “headaches, eye strain and general eye discomfort.”  In fact, a study published by Lighting Research and Technology in 1989 found that exposing workers to lights without flickering “resulted in more than a 50 percent drop in complaints of eye strain and headaches.”

Furthermore, the stroboscopic effect flickering creates can pose a threat to those working around large machinery or moving parts. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, “when objects move or rotate rapidly, [flickering light] makes them look as if they are moving more slowly than their actual speeds – they may even appear stationary if the object is moving at the same rate as the flicker frequency. This could [pose] a safety hazard if someone mistakenly thought that equipment was stationary or was moving slowly.”

Therefore, LED lights reduce the negative health effects and safety risks associated with flickering that fluorescent and incandescent lights pose.

Decreased Occurrence of Headaches

A study published in the August 2008 issue of Oxford University Press found “the UV emissions from a significant percentage of the tested CFLs may result in foreseeable overexposure of the skin when these lamps are used in desk or task lighting applications.”

Human Centric Lighting is a very attractive environment for the healthcare industry. These smart lighting applications have been found to be good to many types of patients in various healthcare settings.

A report from the National Center for Biotechnology Information explains that critically ill patients in the intensive care unit suffer disproportionately from sleep deprivation and frequent sleep disturbances. The brain trauma ward at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark implemented a Human Centric Lighting system to address patient sleep issues in the hope that it would help patients recover faster.

Another area in healthcare where Human Centric Lighting is helping make progress is with Alzheimer’s and related dementias (ADRD) patients. This can result in nocturnal wandering, sleep problems and associated daytime irritability. It is common for patients suffering with ADRD to have their circadian rhythms upended because they are spending most of their time inside and therefore not receiving sufficient natural daylight. Studies from the LRC concluded that a light treatment made to increase circadian stimulation during the day can be used to increase quality of life in those with ADRD. Further research at LRC shows that along with improving behavior, sleep and mood in people with ADRD, lighting has the potential to delay the transition of those living at home to more controlled environments.  

Commercial Real Estate

Disturbing or interrupting circadian rhythms can also affect office employees from a productivity and performance perspective. A study by the University of Twente, VU Amsterdam and CBRE Netherlands in 2016 confirmed the connection between people’s health, well-being and ability to perform and their working environment. For this research, a lighting system with a timer on a circadian friendly schedule was installed. Warm light in the morning, strong bright light in the afternoon and dimmed light in the evening were programmed. Participants who were working with the lighting settings perceived their work performance as 18% better overall. 71% of them felt more energized, 78% felt happier and 78% felt healthier. Above all, the outcome of the study showed a 12% increase in task accuracy and 10% improvement in productivity.

Education

Human Centric Lighting systems have also proven to have advantages in educational settings. High school students are reported to have trouble with being alert earlier in the day. Setting levels of light to match daylight has helped with morning alertness in teenagers. For young students, lighting can be tuned to help them settle down for nap times and then adjust for an increase in awareness during classroom testing times and learning periods.

Taiwan welcomes 2018 with magnificent fireworks and an LED light show. The Taipei 101 is one of Taiwan’s iconic towers.

The Taipei 101 entered the new year with amazing fireworks and an LED light show. The brilliant extravaganza was the longest in the Taipei 101 tower’s history. The LED light show consisted of 140,000 LED lights that covered the 35th floor all the way to the 90th floor on the outside of the tower. The fireworks display was six minutes long. The theme of the firework and light show was “Happy Together” the display is supposed to send a hopeful message that happiness and joy will find everyone over the next 365 days. The light display really made the atmosphere of the show more electrifying. Compared to previous years, the show this year had a more extravagant light display which made the celebration more environmentally friendly.

The new year’s eve countdown party and the firework and light show has brought millions of people (both overseas visitors and locals) to the Taipei City Hall Square over the years.

In NYC when 2018 arrived, it was the coldest celebration in 100 years. Every year in Times Square to ring in the new year, there is the famous ball drop with fireworks and confetti. This year, the ball was 3.5 meters in diameter, weighed 11,875 pounds and was covered with 2,688 triangles that changed colors like a kaleidoscope, illuminated by 32,256 LED lights. This is a lot different from when the first ball drop happened in 1907, when the ball was made of wood and iron and decorated with 100 25 watt light bulbs.

The United Arab Emirates sparkles in the sky are a big deal. The UAE’s beautiful celebrations are always the talk of the town when bringing in the new year. Light Up 2018 at the Burj Khalifa was a magical sight and people got to experience an amazing show. The show set a Guinness World Record for the largest light and sound show on a single building. The 10 minute show had an LED display that consisted of 70,000 LED bulbs and covered 32,467 square metres. It also used 100,000 brackets that were linked smoothly with 55,000 metres of cabling.

Thousands of people came to downtown Dubai to watch the spectacular light show. There were LED lights and fireworks sparkling in the sky. There were so many colors everywhere which created magical and memorable moments for everyone who got to witness it and enjoy a great start to the new year.

It was a big ferris wheel countdown to the new year. The famous ferris wheel at Santa Monica Pier did something new at midnight on new year’s eve to bring in 2018. The countdown was displayed on the side of the ferris wheel starting at 60 seconds. There were 174,000 LED lights along the side of the worlds only solar powered ferris wheel. The LED lights glowed all the way up, just under 90 feet tall. No one needed to reach for their phone or check their watch as they were watching one of the planet’s largest countdown clocks ring in the new year.

Thailand’s capital Bangkok joins everyone in saying goodbye to 2017 and bringing in the new year with beautiful light displays. They have the Thailand Illumination Festival, on until January 6th, 2018. This festival is inspired by the illuminating garden lighting festival in Japan. The garden lighting festival is currently lighting up a 62,400 square metre plot of land. It has more than 1,000,000 dazzling LED lights.
